The Statue That Became a Mystery: What’s the Deal?

Lights, camera, statue! An enigmatic sculpture made its grand entrance at The Game Awards, and just like every good cliffhanger, it left people scratching their heads.

Not too long ago, the mastermind of this award spectacle, Geoff Keighley, teased everyone by sharing an image of this intriguing statue along with a GPS breadcrumb that led straight to a roadside in the Mojave Desert. Because, you know, nothing says “high art” like a lonely statue in the middle of nowhere!

Curious players, fueled by intrigue (and maybe a bit of craziness), have flocked to this desolate location to snap selfies and videos with the statue. The online gaming community, ever so resourceful, has been playing guessing games, trying to deduce which video game this cryptic creation represents. Spoiler alert: it’s definitely not something from a knitting club.

The Statues’ Dark Side

Thanks to its rather “charming” aesthetic—think demons, dragons, and a prior life as a Halloween decoration—most guesses have been rooted in the realms of fantasy or the occasionally sinister. Players have thrown titles into the ring including the likes of God of War, Diablo, Fallout New Vegas, Doom, and even Baldur’s Gate. One can only assume that someone is about to win a trophy for the best guess!

Meanwhile, Cory Barlog, a key player over at Santa Monica Studio, ended the speculation about God of War faster than a cat video goes viral. And then there’s journalist Jason Schreier, who knows the answer but is apparently playing the world’s longest game of “guess who?” and quashed rumors about a Diablo 4 expansion before anyone could get too excited. Who knew statue drama could be this riveting?

A Twist in the Tale

Here comes the plot twist: MP1st stepped up and seems to have cracked the case wide open! They discovered a trio of freshly trademarked gems in Europe, all tied to the Divinity series from Larian Studios. Talk about a twist plot worthy of a screenwriter’s desk!

These exciting trademarks include a brand-new Divinity logo (with a font that screams “Look at me, I’m fancy!”), an icon reminiscent of a spider web (but, like, a polished one), and another charming little design featuring a circle with—wait for it—long spikes. That’s one way to say “approach with caution!”

So, what’s the conclusion? MP1st cheekily pointed out that one of those logos bears a striking resemblance to a design on the statue itself, hilariously leading to rampant speculation that it might pertain to a remake, remaster, or potentially a new quirky entry in the Divinity saga. Can’t wait for that announcement party! Bring on the confetti!

A Trip Down Memory Lane

Larian has been busy creating magic since 2002, churning out five main Divinity titles, including Divine Divinity, Beyond Divinity, and more recently, Divinity: Original Sin 2. The last adventure was unwrapped in 2017, but like a fine wine, it seems they decided to age it for a bit.

In the meantime, Larian shifted gears and demanded attention with Baldur’s Gate 3, which made quite the splash in 2023, picking up six awards at The Game Awards, including—drumroll, please—Game of the Year! Talk about a success story!

Just last year, the big cheese at Larian, Swen Vinke, proclaimed the studio’s bold ambition to step away from the Dungeons & Dragons universe and explore new IPs. The gaming world collectively gasped as the studio hinted at TWO new projects. So many possibilities, so little time!
