Legendary loot is the lifeblood of your adventure in Borderlands, and Borderlands 4 is no exception. While obtaining legendary gear is more challenging than in previous installments, don’t worry—there are still plenty of reliable methods to accumulate it in significant quantities.
Borderlands 4 may have made some questionable choices in shifting to an open-world format, but it does offer a more structured and logical approach to hunting for legendary gear compared to its predecessor. In this guide, we will explore the best ways to secure the ultimate equipment for your character.
Shift Codes
As always, Shift Codes present a golden opportunity to score some legendary gear without too much hassle. All you need to do is unlock at least one faction town and locate the skeleton chest that is there. Since Gearbox implemented this system, the loot provided has consistently been top-notch, and this installment is no different. Even if you don’t plan to use the codes immediately, we recommend collecting them—some codes have expiration dates. Keep in mind that the gear given will be at your level, so it might be wise to wait until you’re close to level 50 before using them.
Boss Farming
A significant new feature, and honestly the best decision Gearbox has made regarding this, is the ability to repeatedly challenge the game’s bosses for a fee. After defeating a boss, return to the room just before their arena to find Moxxi’s station. Place your wager, and you’re ready for round two! It’s up to you to optimize your gear for the specific boss to take them down quickly and loot accordingly.
Increase Difficulty
Raising the difficulty level ensures a higher quality of loot, but we strongly advise against doing this if you are solo. Enemies typically boast several levels beyond yours, and on higher difficulties, this disparity becomes even more pronounced, resulting in colossal damage and diminished survival rates. Pay attention to the difficulty of the missions you begin; some missions can be “very hard” even when you’re playing on minimum difficulty. Nonetheless, the more you challenge yourself, the better loot you can expect to find.
Ultimate Hunter Level
Once you’ve completed the game’s campaign and introduced yourself to endgame activities, you will enter Ultimate Hunter mode, which features increased world difficulties. As you advance through these levels, the quality of loot available to you will improve. However, progressing in Ultimate Hunter mode will require you to complete specific challenges that may test your skills. Roll up your sleeves—it’s all for the good of your build!
Maurice’s Black Market
Maurice’s Black Market is also an endgame activity, so you’ll need to finish the main storyline before you can take advantage of it. Marked on your map, this special vendor exclusively offers legendary gear, but it comes at a steep price. His inventory and location change weekly, so keep an eye on the timer displayed in the bottom left of your map once the credits roll—it indicates how much time remains before Maurice relocates.
