During an enlightening chat at the PlayStation Partner Awards 2025 in the most beautiful corner of Japan, the illustrious Yuya Tokuda spilled some tea about the game, or at least, the gaming industry’s equivalent of it. Apparently, in an effort that could either be called brilliant or mildly reckless, the team decided that Monster Hunter Wilds should roll out the welcome mat for newbies. Spoiler alert: it might have made the game a bit of a walk in the park for long-time fans. Sad trombone sound here.
“We scrutinized what kind of hurdles were popping up for beginners, including their rather awkward dance with Monster Hunter: World,” Tokuda mused, suggesting the development team essentially set up a classroom syllabus for newcomers. The results? Prizes for monster-slaying and much-needed armor crafting were made easier to achieve. Hurray for the rookies!
Focus Mode: For the Easily Distracted!
In a bold attempt to be the heroes that gamers needed (or maybe just the ones they didn’t ask for), the mad scientists at the studio introduced innovations alongside classic elements that can be quite handy: all hail Focus Mode! But hang on; while this was all good and well for the fresh-faced players, seasoned veterans of the series found themselves shaking their fists at the heavens. Not enough challenge? Blasphemy!
Tokuda graciously acknowledged that in the whirlwind of making the game accessible for greenhorns, the difficulty curve for veterans gone flaccid made serious waves. As if to clear up any hard feelings, the team has since set the stage for retribution in the form of challenging gameplay crafted specifically for those hardcore enthusiasts who need some spice in their digital life.
The Call to Arms!
To those who conquered the game faster than a cheetah on roller skates and promptly dropped it like an old sock, Tokuda has a heartfelt request: “If you blasted through the game post-launch and have since entered hibernation mode, please, for the love of all pixels, give it another shot!” As if players weren’t already drowning in the endless sea of gaming choices, right?
Sales Success or Dramatic Plummet?
Initially, Monster Hunter Wilds strutted onto the scene like a peacock, boasting blockbuster vibes with a whopping 10 million copies flying off the shelves in its debut month. Drumroll, please! However, as with all things that shine bright, the sales have taken a nosedive that could be described as “not great, Bob!” In the following quarter, just 160,000 copies were sold; that’s like watching a goldfish slowly swim in circles after being completely fizzled out.
Comparatively, it’s all a tad sobering when looking at the cushy figures of 2018’s champion, which managed a staggering 28 million sales over time. That’s some serious bragging rights! And here’s hoping that with some added challenges, those wayward souls will emerge from their gaming caves once more.
