The creative director of the upcoming installment in the famed shooter franchise has expressed concerns about a specific mod that enables players to skip in-game dialogue.
Dialog Skipper Mod Features
Named Dialog Skipper and available on Nexus Mods, this tool introduces a hotkey functionality allowing players to bypass ongoing dialogues. It also features an Auto Skip option that eliminates all dialogue in one go. Additionally, the mod includes a speed-up feature to help players navigate sections with prolonged NPC animations, though this enhancement is disabled in co-op mode.
Purpose Behind the Mod
While some may view the mod as a commentary on the game’s writing quality, its developer insists it aims to enhance replayability. This would allow players who have completed the game to venture through it again without enduring previously encountered dialogues.
Community Response
The mod has garnered attention, particularly in the speedrunning community, where some users have proposed that the game’s developers consider implementing a dialogue skipping feature as part of the official game settings.
Creative Director’s Warning
In response to these discussions, Graeme Timmins, the creative director, cautioned against using the mod. He articulated that the complexity of adding a dialogue skip feature extends beyond initial perceptions, and warned that it could potentially disrupt players’ progress in the game.
I’d be cautious using this mod; skipping dialog could lead to broken mission states that might not be recoverable. This request is way more involved and riskier than it appears on the surface with how dialog is integrated within our mission system. Don’t ask me how I know.

Dialogue Quality in the Game
Reviews have highlighted the quality of dialogue in the new entry, with a notable emphasis on the improvement in tone compared to its predecessor. Critics have remarked, “The game delivers a great shooter that mostly ditches the cringe.”
Humor in Borderlands 4
Much of the pre-release conversation revolved around the humor embedded in the game. While humor remains subjective, and the third installment was criticized for its over-the-top cringe elements, the latest entry adopts a more restrained approach. There are still moments of humorous dialogue, albeit to a lesser extent than before.
Notably, the game sees a reduction in familiar tropes, with characters like Claptrap taking on a smaller role, and Tiny Tina, often associated with the humor from the earlier game, being noticeably absent.
