Single-Project Focus for the Future

Plans for PlayStation’s Sucker Punch studio indicate it will continue as a one-project wonder following the launch of Ghost of Yotei. So, those dreaming of a multi-franchise extravaganza might want to adjust those expectations — quickly.

The Philosophical Quandary of Project Selection

In a reflective chat about Ghost of Yotei, co-founder Brian Fleming highlighted the studio’s commitment to maintain a modest footprint in the triple-A realm. The decision regarding the next project will surface only after the multiplayer add-on, Ghost of Yotei: Legends, makes its grand entrance next year.

“Honestly, whatever comes next — whether it’s a continuation of Ghost or a nostalgic jaunt back to Sly — the reality is that we’re constrained by our love of focus and the precious time it takes to iterate,” he noted. “One project at a time will remain our mantra.”

The Juggling Act That Isn’t

He further elaborated, “If only we were skilled jugglers of four projects, oh what a world that would be! A remaster here, a fan-request there… But alas, only one project gets the green light each time.”

“This makes it essential to go with the best idea, doesn’t it? Not that there’s a shortage of spectacular concepts — there’s a veritable treasure trove — but only one can rise to the top, and it takes about five years to get there. It’s akin to picking a college and a major every half-decade. Delightful pressure, really.”

The Generational Shift

With the studio’s 30th anniversary lurking around the corner in 2027, nostalgia for beloved franchises like Sly and InFamous is palpable among fans. However, this diversity of expectations adds a layer of complexity for the team. Fleming commented, “At this milestone, our workforce includes offspring of former employees, and some staff weren’t even around when the studio first opened its doors!”

“This evolution introduces a unique challenge. Changes over the years, from Sly to InFamous and Ghost, often mean leaving behind not just the projects, but team members who have been part of the journey, some of whom might not share an interest in a historical setting.”

Hope for Franchise Comebacks

In an interesting note, the director of the InFamous series recently expressed a desire to revisit the franchise. Yet, before anyone gets too excited, it’s essential to recognize there are currently no concrete plans in the pipeline.
