Borderlands 3 Guide: Planets, Zones, and Sanctuary 3

Recently, we took a deep dive into the vehicle system in Borderlands 3. Now, we’re excited to explore the expansive world of the game and its planetary system. Buckle up, because there’s a lot to unpack here, and the details are crafted just for you. As always, beware of spoilers ahead!

We’re sure you’re caught up with the saga and have finished the previous installments. Nevertheless, a quick refresher never hurt anybody! Sanctuary is the main hub in the Borderlands series (with the exception of Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel, which has a unique story). In this town, you can do just about anything. Good news: the city is back but in a revamped form… Welcome to Sanctuary 3, your new means of transport through the universe of Borderlands 3.

Sanctuary 3

Yes, Sanctuary flies; we knew that already. The city can take to the stars, allowing you to travel from planet to planet. In the game, this will be your personal hub where you can unwind after completing challenging missions. Sanctuary 3 is not only customizable but also fully modifiable, expanding much beyond what previous games offered. You can meet friends, collect lost loot, and prepare for the adventures awaiting you. And yes, your personal room is also situated aboard!

Crew and Spaceship Features:

  • Marcus is on board: He enhances our carrying capacity for ammo and, of course, he has a shooting range.
  • Moxxi runs her bar in Sanctuary, and she’s brought her famous slot machines aboard too.
  • Tannis is still around, managing the infirmary… Not quite as reassuring as Zed…
  • There’s a trophy room in Sanctuary 3, which operates with Hammerlock. He issues quests to hunt specific creatures, and once the mission is completed, the trophy of the beast will proudly sit in our hub.
  • Ellie’s Catch-A-Ride is also present on the vessel.
  • Earl the Crazy might not have been missed by you. Unfortunately, he’s still in Sanctuary, right alongside us… What will we do with the Eridium in this installment? Good question.

Planets and Other Locations in the Game

In Borderlands 3, there will be a day-night cycle for each planet, allowing developers to play with lighting effects and make each world unique. As you gathered, Sanctuary 3 facilitates travel between planets. But which planets can you explore?

  • Pandora, the hot planet
  • Promethea, the urban planet
  • Eden-6, the swampy planet
  • Athenas, the autumn planet
  • A last unknown planet

Note:

  • There may be locations outside of the main planets, such as asteroids, moons, or space stations. These would be smaller areas but could present new opportunities within the game’s narrative.
  • Gravity changes have been confirmed in different locations on the planets, but details about their influence on gameplay are still scarce.

Detailed Planet List

Here we dive into the details, providing you with the maximum information available on each planet in the game. Gearbox will unveil more details throughout August, but for now, the names of these locations can send your imagination into overdrive.

Pandora

Pandora is a large, nearly uninhabitable rock where the Descendants of the Vault have settled. Its scorching deserts, cruel fauna, and hordes of bandits have proven deadly for those attempting to tame its land and harvest its resources. Ruins from Dahl, Atlas, and Hyperion adorn this planet populated by Skags, Rakks, Salgauss, and other predators that are eager to kill and devour you—if you’re lucky, perhaps in that order.

Three locations on this planet are already known:

  • Roland’s Rest
  • Camp of the Eclipse
  • Saint Center of Broadcasting

Promethea

Promethea is a metropolitan world turned war zone since the siege launched by Maliwan, one of Pandora’s arms manufacturers. Their mechanized infantry now patrols the streets while the sewers and alleyways are teeming with Ratch, a hybrid of rodent and insect. This is where we will find Rhys Strongfork, the protagonist of the narrative game Tales from the Borderlands and the director of Atlas. Indeed, this planet is the origin of the Atlas corporation, explaining why Rhys Strongfork controlled this world until Maliwan went to war with them. Promethea is also where the first traces of Eridian technologies can be found (from the long-lost advanced alien race). Thanks to this technology, Atlas built its fortune. The story surrounding Promethea is murky, much like its current situation. Moreover, as if the developers wanted to match the visual atmosphere with the lore, this planet is perpetually cast in twilight.

Three locations on this planet are already known:

  • Atlas Campus
  • Titan Skyway
  • Meridian Spaceport

Eden-6

On Eden-6, a swampy planet covered in greenery, murky water, rusted shipwrecks, and sparse settlements, the Jakobs family made their home. Civilization has never truly thrived here, and among the dangers that inhabit the area are voracious Saurs and semi-clairvoyant Chukles. As if that weren’t enough, the Descendants of the Vault have also taken root here.

Three locations on this planet are already known:

  • Jakobs Manor
  • Amber Mire
  • Fortress of the Sun

Athenas

Athenas is the birthplace of Maya. It appears to be deeply connected to anything related to sirens and their powers. This peaceful, misty planet recently attracted unwanted attention. Athenas is mostly uninhabited, except for a sect of monks known as the Order of the Imminent Storm, who have settled atop its mountains. What secrets do they conceal high up in an ancient building established long before humans set foot on Athenas?

Three locations on this planet are already known:

  • Storm’s Court
  • Dido’s Regret
  • Hermitage

Unknown Planet

Currently, no information is available about this planet. We know it exists, but its nuances remain a mystery. Speculation is the only thing we have at this point.

Some Speculation

This guide wouldn’t be complete without making some assumptions. Here are a few theories circulating online that could potentially be confirmed once the game is released:

  • Could we see a return of the breathing kits from the previous games? It’s possible that some areas in the universe of Borderlands 3 may lack oxygen for the Vault Hunters to breathe.
  • Could we envision a planet or a location featuring aquatic passages? There’s some chatter based on a line from the last DLC of Borderlands 2. Hammerlock speaks of Junpei-7, an aquatic planet he has always wanted to visit. If this location exists, mechanics could resemble those from Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel. Underwater breathing and geysers could be part of the experience. Wait and see!
